Traditionally when a boy celebrates his bar mitzfah he’s showered with gifts and money from friends and family. Recently, however, a 13-year-old boy from Texas celebrated his bar mitzfah in the most selfless way he could think of. In lieu of gifts Drew Frank asked only for cash donations. When Drew tallied up the money he had received the total came in around $25,000…an amount which would contribute well to and education fund, a vehicle, or even a house down the road, but instead of keeping the money for himself he chose to donate it (yes all of it!).
He decided to team up with the Braden Aboud Foundation and purchased 800 pairs of Nike shoes and 800 pairs of socks which were then given away to those who needed them. Over half the shoes were given to an elementary school in a low-income neighbourhood and the rest to a local orphanage and a transitional living center for women and children.
In Drew’s words, “I just wanted to give back to these kids who are less fortunate than me.”
