You’ve heard the old saying before, “Don’t go to bed angry,” but now there’s some science behind the idea that will have you thinking twice about holding a grudge when you go to sleep.
A research team from China and the U.S. published an article this week that reveals sleeping can actually reinforce negative thoughts and memories in a person’s brain, actually making matters worse the next morning.
A group of individuals were shown negative images and then asked to suppress their negative emotions when shown the images again; researchers found that leaving the thoughts to rest over night made the emotions much harder to get rid of.
From this study researchers say they hope to have a better understanding of how to treat PTSD, but say more research is still needed.
