Now that I’ve had the chance to re-cooperate I thought it would be a great time to reflect on this year’s Mayor’s Run/Walk for Fitness! Last year was the first time I had taken part in the event partly for work but also to complete a fitness goal I had set with my gym to complete a 5 km run without having to stop. I will never forget last year’s event because it was so cold people actually showed up with toques and mitts and even warm jackets despite it being the last weekend of May! This year was so much better, the sun was shining and it was actually warm and dry even though it had been raining throughout the week! This year Rustie convinced me it would be a good idea to try out the 10 km run…I was kind of on the fence because I definitely did not think I was in good enough shape to run 10 km without embarrassing myself (I’ll also admit here that Rustie was right and I was wrong). Often times when I’ve tried to run at the gym I find myself staring at the clock counting down the minutes until I can get off, but this event had us running all over the city. Even though we drive past a lot of the same landscape every day and don’t think twice, there’s something very peaceful about running past and through it all at once. It was definitely the more scenic than the clock on the wall running through Wascana park, past the Legislative building and Mackenzie Art Gallery.
Just before the run started Rustie and Mayor Fougere got up and spoke about the idea behind the event and how it was meant to be a starting point and an encouraging opportunity to get Regina residents out and moving. Having taken part for the past two year I would have to say that’s exactly what the Mayor’s run has done for me! If you’re looking to get active, taking part in this or any other fun run/walks hosted throughout the summer are the perfect way to get started, all it requires is a pair of shoes and you can even do it with friends!
