A mom from West Virginia has been shining the spotlight on her family’s hairdresser this month, who recently went out of her way to help make a 4-year-old boy with autism as comfortable as possible during his hair appointment.
Jennifer McCafferty says her son Isaiah was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder just under a year ago and often is sensitive to large crowds and sounds close to his ears, and as a result has trouble when it comes to getting his hair trimmed.
Recently Jennifer decided to take Isaiah to a new hair salon where she says they were randomly paired with stylist Kaylen Barker. Within minutes of walking into the studio Kaylen and Isaiah were sitting on the salon floor talking about “Finding Dory” and getting to know one another to the point that Isaiah eventually calmed down, sat on her lap, and let her trim his hair.
“I’ve cut a lot of kids’ hair over the years and just learned that you have to go their level and connect with them where they are,” she said. “Most kids are afraid of haircuts and him being on the spectrum made it even scarier for him.”
Jennifer shared her experience on Facebook in the post below that has reached almost 100,000 likes!
Definitely an experience neither Jennifer nor Kaylen will ever forget!
