Many of us have taken to complaining about the cold weather here in Saskatchewan over the past week. I don’t blame anyone who complains about the cold, you’re stiff, unmotivated, you have to plug in and start your car in advance, which cuts out any chance of sleeping in in the morning, but it turns out the cold could be doing us some good!
Research from a Dutch university has found that the cold could help boost your metabolism. The study took about 10 years to complete and followed the effects of being cold on different people. Researchers found that our bodies have to work a little hard to stay warm at a cooler room temperature which can account for up to 30% of our body’s energy usage. This is turn can lead to more calories burned…a perfect solution if you’re looking to cut some of that Christmas weight!
Researchers suggest keeping a room temperature of about 17C to achieve the results. An added bonus, the cold weather outdoors won’t feel quite as bad if you’re used to living in a cooler home year round!
